Debunking the Tortured Artist Narrative
This is me, sipping a coffee in downtown Houston. I look carefree and maybe for a brief moment I was. But below the surface, this photo was taken during the height of my depression back in 2019.
Posing without a care, I’m the embodiment of the tortured artist. I’m clutching a $6 snack I didn’t think I deserved on a family vacation I couldn’t afford. I was deeply lost, devastated, and under the impression that all of these emotions and my struggle to find a job were my fault for choosing music as a career path. I was barely hanging by a thread.
I’m sharing this to let you know that you don’t have to be a tortured artist.
And I’m actually here to debunk the entire idea.
I’m passionate about spreading the tools of wellness for musicians because so many of us are lead astray by the narrative of the tortured artist.
We are lead to believe that musicians are special people that are exempt from taking care of themselves because being “tortured” is what helps us create.
We overlook behaviors like anxiety, depression, self harm, suicide, and drugs as if they are just part of the package of being an artist. Many of us fall back on this idea of the tortured artist or the starving artist narratives when we can’t pay our rent, haven’t landed the next gig or become so strangled by our depression that we lose the ability to write and be happy. We believe we aren’t worthy of more, that anxiety and depression are our curse or worse – that these depressive episodes are our fault and can make us into a more “authentic artist” if we just suffer silently in our pain or write about it.
I call BS on it.
We may be musicians and artists, but we are humans first. We are worthy of rock solid, stable and beautiful lives. We are worthy of a life free from the control of anxiety, depression or addiction. I’m here to remind you that you can have an empowered, beautiful life and you are worthy of it.
As humans, we are often ill-equipped to cope with the variety of emotions that we experience. Take that up a notch and you have musicians, who ride unbelievable highs that can crash and leave us feeling unimaginable lows and depression. We face immense criticism in our studies, as performers and/or as students learning our trade. We face crushing pressure form society to be both available at all times and for little to no pay, to also have a “productive job” and produce amazing works of art and keep in our lane. And as if that wasn’t enough we share our emotions and hearts with every performance, composition, practice session or musical encounter – for the world to criticize.
A solid foundation in wellness can help you cope with stress and the emotions of the highs, lows and everything in between. It can help you manage anxiety and depression, help you find joy outside of your musical life, and give you the energy to tackle your music lessons, shows, writing sessions or educational pursuits. Wellness can give you an outlet to feel your feelings, help you curate a peaceful mindset and find a deeper meaning for your life and your life’s mission as an artist. And help you set the professional boundary for getting paid.
You do not have to be tortured to write or perform deeply authentic music. You do not deserve to starve between gigs. You do not need to experience each wave of anxiety and depression and feel as if you are barely holding on. You deserve an abundant life and the pay that comes with that. You are a human being that is worthy of loving yourself. And I call on you to show yourself great compassion for choosing this brave and courageous path.
Let this be the summer you start taking care of yourself!
